Breast Cancer Screening:
Ultimately, the timing and frequency of mammograms is up to you and your provider, based on your family history and personal risk profile.
In general, it is recommended that mammography be offered annually or every other year for women aged 50 to 74. Before age 50, national recommendations vary. Most providers feel that a baseline mammogram at age 40 is appropriate, with future timing of mammograms determined based on the results of this baseline.
Ultimately, the timing and screening of pap smears is up to you and your provider, based on your family history and personal risk profile.
In general, it is agreed that pap smears should be offered to all women ages 21 to 65. If screening results are normal, a pap smear should be provided every 3 to 5 years. Abnormal results will be followed up more closely.
